אני מקווה שלכל אחד מכם הייתה
חופשה נעימה ומהנה. במהלך הימים הקרובים אני אטוס חזרה למשרדי באיטליה. אז
לפני שאעזוב אני רוצה לראות אם אוכל לשלוח מספר הודעות. ברבות מההודעות
ששלחתי במהלך האביב והקיץ של 2006 הזכרתי שוב ושוב כי לא ראיתי גוזלים של
כל מין שהוא, כולל דרורים. אני לא יכול להאמין למה שראיתי במחוז יוניון
בניו ג'רסי! ראיתי אלפים ואלפים של ציפורים שחורות, יחד עם מספר סטרלינגים.
בבוקר זה, להקה ענקית של ציפורים שחורות כיסתה את השטח שלי בכניסה למשרד
וצבעה אותה בשחור. כאשר הן נבהלו במהלך הניסיונות לצלם אותן, הן עפו לשמיים
והחשיכו את השמש? במהלך הימים האחרונים ראיתי להקות גדולות של ציפורים אלה
יחד עם סטארלינגים ברחבי שכונות רבות.
אנחנו כמעט בסוף דצמבר,
זמן שבכל שנה שאני יכול לזכור, הדשא והעשבים שרופים כמעט לחלוטין מהכפור
ומזג האוויר הקר. עד עתה השנה, זה ניראה כמו אביב.
הדשאים ירוקים, יש עשבים ירוקים רבים סביב, ולכן הציפורים עדיין נשארות
באזור זה. אני לא זוכר שראיתי נדידה של ציפורים בקנה מידה זה בזמן זה של

ציפורים שחורות אלה

ולאתר כמה מקורות לאצטרובלים הנאספים באופן מסחרי ולהוסיף אותם לדיאטה של
הציפורים שלי? אם הם טובים לציפורים השחורות ולסטארלינגים הם צריכים להיות
טובים גם לציפורים שלנו המוחזקות בכלובים. האם מישהו יודע אם יש אצטרובלים
נמכרים היכן שהוא? אני יודע שבאיטליה אוספים אותם ומוכרים למגדלי חזירים (יכול
להיות שג'ינו מתכוון לבלוטים? ת.ג.). ברצינות, הייתי שמח אם הייתה לי
גישה לכמה מאצטרובלים אלה. אם יהיה לי יום יפה במהלך הימים הבאים אני אראה
אם אוכל לאסוף כמה מהאדמה מתחת לעצים.
תערוכות הציפורים חלפו
כולן? אתה מגיע לכל הציפורים לנוח למשך שלושה חודשים. באופן זה, הן יהיה
בריאות ובכושר לקראת עונת הריבוי הבאה. תוכנית הריבוי שלי תתחיל סביב אמצע
מרץ 2007 ואם הכל יסתדר אני מצפה לטבע 400 - 500 גוזלים? חשיבה אופטימית!
אני אעשה את הדברים הנכונים, בתקווה שהציפורים יגיבו בהתאם.
לכל אילה שאין להם נמלים
במכנסיים (חסרי סבלנות) ואינם מרבים בזמן זה אתם עושים את הדבר הנכון. יש
עונה לכל דבר, עונת הריבוי, עונת הנשירה, עונת המנוחה. אין ציפור בבר
המתרבה בעטנה זו, מבלי קשר למה הטמפרטורה. שעות יום ארוכות יותר מעוררות את
מערכת הריבוי של הציפורים. כל הציפורים אוכלות הזרעים בעונה זו של השנה או
היכן שלוח השנה מראה חורף, נחות, ולכן גם הציפורים בחדר הציפורים שלנו
צריכות לנוח, לפחות שלי נחות.
האור המלאכותי בחדר
הגידול שלי נידלק ב 7:30 בבוקר, בשעה בה העובדים מתחילים לעבוד, וכבה
ב-5 אחה"צ. אף אחד מהקנרים שלי או הקרדוליאנים אינו מטיל ביצים. מדי יום
אני מדבר עם מגדלי ציפורים והם מספרים שהציפורים שלהם מטילות לכל הכיוונים.
ובכן, הציפורים שלי חיות בסביבה אידיאלית, הן מקבלות דיאטה אידיאלית,
מטופלות כראוי, מדוע הציפורים שלי אינן מטילות? (אני שמח שלא) אבל הן יטילו
ביצים בשבועות האחרונים של מרץ/תחילת אפריל. על ידי התחלת תוכנית הריבוי

הציפורים שלי בעונה זו של
השנה מקבלות תערובת זרעים יבשים מאוזנת. פעם בשבוע הן מקבלות תוספת זרעים
מושרים מעורבת 50/50 עם מזון גוזלים. כפעמיים בשבוע הן מקבלות כמות קטנה של
עלים ירוקים כהים. על מנת לצמצם את כמות הטפילים אנו מרססים את הציפורים
וחדר הגידול בריסוס נגד חרקים מדי שבועיים. כפי שהזכרתי פעמים רבות, אנו
נותנים מקלחת מים קרים מדי יומיים. לכל 5 ליטר של מים אנו מוספים כף של
חומץ תפוחים או של ליסטרין, לעיתים אנו מוסיפים כף של אקונומיקה. אנו
משתמשים באקונומיקה לצמצם את התפשטות המחלות בבית הגידול.
זה גם הזמן לבצע טיפול
בציפורים כנגד קרדיות שק אוויר בעזרת איוורמרקטין, הנחיתי את העוזר שלי
לבצע את הטיפול בשבועות הקרובים. אנו חוזרים על הטיפול לאחר 14 ימים, ואז
חוזרים עליו בסוף עונת הריבוי.

I hope that every one of you
had a pleasant and joyful holiday. I will be flying back to my office in
Italy within the next few days. So before I leave I want to see if I can
do a few postings. In many of my postings throughout the spring and
summer of 2006 I repeatedly mentioned that I haven't seen any offspring
of any species of birds including sparrows. I can't believe what I saw
in Union County New Jersey areas! Literally I have seen thousands and
thousands of Black Birds, coupled with a very few Starlings. This
morning, an enormous flock of these Black birds literally covered my
lawn in the front of office in complete blackness. When they were scared
off in attempt to take pictures, they flew up toward the sky and
blackened the sun? For the last few days I have seen large flocks of
these birds along with very few Starlings everywhere in many
neighborhoods.
We are almost at the end of December, when every year that I can
remember, the lawn, grasses, and vegetables nearly burn out from the
frost and the cold weather. So far this year, it looks like spring.
The lawns are green, plenty of wild greens are available everywhere,
therefore the birds are still hanging around this area. I don't
remember seeing a migration of this caliber at this time of the year.
It is very unusual.
These black birds and Starlings feed on the ground, especially under the
acorn tree. They clean up my front lawn of all the acorns; they left
nothing behind for the squirrels to eat. All these wild birds look so
healthy with shiny plumage, maybe the acorns they are eating are
beneficial to their health and plumage.
For several years I have been observing Black birds devouring acorns,
even in Florida. I had in my mind to try to locate some of these acorns
commercially harvested to include in the diet of my birds? If they are
good for the Black birds and Starlings it should be good for our caged
birds kept in captivity. Does any one of you know if acorns are
available for sale anywhere? I know they harvest it and sell it to the
pig farmers in Italy. Seriously, I would love to have access to some of
these acorns. If I get a nice day in the next few days I'm going to
see if I can gather some from the ground under the acorn tree.
The caged bird exhibitions are all over? Now all caged birds deserve to
rest for the next three months. By doing so, they will be healthy and
fit for the next breeding season. My breeding program will start around
mid March 2007 and if everything goes well I expect to have the first
eggs the first week of April and two or three weeks thereafter I expect
to band four or five hundred youngsters? Wishful thinking! I will do
the right things and hopefully the birds respond accordingly.
For all those who haven't got ants in their pants and they are not
breeding at this time you are doing the right thing. There is a season
for everything, the breeding season, the molting season, the resting
season. No birds in the wild state breed at this time of the year
regardless of the outside temperature. Longer daylight hours trigger
the birds reproductive system. All seed eating birds in their wild
habitat at this time of the year or where the calendar marks winter the
birds are resting, so should the birds in our bird room should be
resting also, at least mine are.
My artificial light in my bird room goes on at 7:30 am, the time when
the employees start work, and goes off at 5:00 pm. None of my Canaries
or Carduelan Finches are laying eggs. Everyday I speak to different
bird fanciers and they say that their birds are laying eggs left and
right. Well, my birds are living in an ideal environment, they are fed
an ideal diet, they are well managed, why aren't my birds laying
eggs? (I'm glad they don't) But they will be laying eggs during
the last week of March/beginning of April. By starting my breeding
program the last week in March/ beginning of April I am confident and I
am definitely sure that I will experience fewer clear eggs, fewer
non-feeding parents, and I will produce lots of youngsters?
My birds at this time of the year are fed a well balanced dry seed diet.
Once a week they receive a supplement of soak seed blended 50/50 with a
good dry nestling food. About a couple times a week they receive a
small amount of dark greens. To minimize the infestation of avian
parasites we spray the birds and bird room with the good
Pyrethrum/Petroleum spray every two weeks. As I mentioned many times
before, we religiously give a cold water bath every two days. To each
gallon of bathing water we add either a tablespoon of Apple cider
vinegar, or a tablespoon of Listerine, or occasionally we add a
tablespoon of bleach. We use the bleach to minimize the spreading of
disease among the birds in the holding cages.
In the next couple weeks I instructed my helper to supply the birds
drinking water with the addition of Ivermectin. We repeat the treatment with Ivermectin in 14 days and
then we do it again at the end of the breeding season. The instructions
