הנושא העיקרי אתמול בתוכניות הטלוויזיה היה השיטפונות בצפון מזרח ארה"ב. מזג האוויר השתגע בחלקים גדולים של העולם. חשבתי לעבור לאזור מדברי של אריזונה או כל מקום אחר בו הגשמים תקופתיים ורוב הזמן מזג האוויר יבש. אני מיואש ועייף מהטפטוף הבלתי פוסק באזור זה!

יש לחות רבה בכל מקום, בבית, במשרד, ומייבש האוויר בחדר הגידול מוציא עשרות ליטרים מדי יום. לחות זה מייצרת עבודה נוספת רבה בטיפול בציפורים. אנו חייבים לשמור עליהן יבשות ונקיות. מזון לח מחמיץ במהירות, ואנו עושים ככל יכולתנו למנוע מהציפורים גישה למזון מקולקל. קנריות וקרדוליאנים צעירים, ובכללם ירקונים וחוחיות אירופאיות, יכולים למות במהירות אם הם אוכלים מזון מקולקל ומעופש.

כאשר הציפורים הצעירות שלנו מסוגלות לפצח זרעים יבשים, אנו מצמצמים בהדרגה את כמות המזון הרך, הן צריכות לאכול זרעים יבשים רבים ככל האפשר. מזון רך רב מדי לצעירים יכול לפגוע בבריאותם, ובנוסף הם יסרבו לאכול את הזרעים היבשים, הטובים להם.

צעירים בריאים של גולדיאנים למעשה מסוגלים לפצח זרעים עם פריחתם מהקן. גולדיאנים מתרבים, לפי ניסיוני, לא דורשים מזון רך רב על מנת להאכיל את הצעירים. הם יכולים להאכיל את הצעירים בדוחן יבש בלבד ויישארו שמחים ובריאים. למרות זאת, הם משתגעים כאשר אנו שמים זרעים מושרים (לא מונבטים) לפניהם. אנו פשוט משרים את התערובת הגולדיאנים המיוחדת המורכבת בעיקרה מסוגי דוחן שונים וחפורית (Canary grass seed).אנו משרים את התערובת למשך 4-6 שעות בלבד, מוציאים את המים העודפים, ושמים בצינצנת זכוכית בטמפרטורת החדר למשך 18 שעות נוספות. לאחר מכן אנו שוטפים אותם היטב תחת מים קרים זורמים, מנערים את המים העודפים, מוסיפים כמות קטנה של מזון גוזלים יבש טוב, ומגישים כמות קטנה לגולדיאנים המאכילים גוזלים ולצעירים שפרחו מהקן. אנו נזהרים מאוד שמאכל זה לא יחמיץ, דבר אשר יפגע בבריאות הציפורים, צעירות ובוגרות. מתן כמות קטנה מדי פעם לא רק יועיל לציפורים, אלא גם יבטיח להם חיי כלוב טובים ושמחים.

יש לי קבוצת טימברדו אשר אני מלמד את שירת הטימברדו הנקייה. מעולם לא עשיתי זאת, אבל אני אדע את התוצאות, טובות אן רעות, כאשר תגיע עונת התערוכות.

Yesterday in the PM hours I spent a lot of time cultivating part of my gardens. I was hoping that it would stay dry for a few hours but as soon as I finished, the sky opened up and spoiled my fun. As I posted yesterday, weeds are growing beautifully but everything else, including my vegetable plants are at a stand still. In the past when the weather climate was good I had ripe tomatoes at this time of the year. Not this year, the tomato plants don't even have flowers yet in my tomato fields.

Lots of humidity is everywhere, in the house, in our office, and the dehumidifier in my bird room collects gallons of water every day. This humidity creates a lot of extra work for us to manage the birds. We must keep them dry and clean. Moist food goes sour very quickly, and we do everything possibly to avoid bird access to the spoiled food. Young Canaries and Carduelan Finches, including European Greenfinches and European Goldfinches, can die very easily if they eat spoiled, rancid food.

When our young birds are able to crack dry seed we gradually minimize the supplementation of soft food, they must eat dry seed as much as possible. Feeding too much soft food to youngsters can be detrimental to their health and furthermore they will refuse to eat the dry seed, which is good for them.

Good, healthy Gouldian Finch youngsters are able to crack seed practically as soon as they come out of the nest box. Breeding Gouldians, based on my experience, do not require too much soft food to feed their youngsters. They can feed the youngsters just on dry millet and they stay happy and healthy too. However, they go crazy when we put soak (not sprouted) seed before them. We simply soak the special Gouldian mix consisting primarily of various millet seeds and Canary grass seeds. We soak the seed for only 4-6 hours, we drain it, and let it sit in a glass jar at room temperature for an additional 18 hours. At that time, we rinse it thoroughly under running cold water, shake the excess water, we add a small amount of a good dry nestling food and we put it before the feeding Gouldian parents and to the fledging youngsters a small amount at a time. We are very careful that this soft food concoction does not go sour, which will be detrimental to the health of the birds, young and old. Feeding a small amount at a time not only will be beneficial to the birds but also will assure them a good, happy cage life.

I have a group of Timbrados that I am training to sing the pure Timbrados song. I never done this before but I will know the results, good or bad, when the exhibition season is upon us.
