המטפטפת, מדינת הגנים. מזג האוויר כאן במחוז סומרסט משוגע לחלוטין. הוא לא
טוב לציפורים בחוץ, הוא לא טוב לחווה הקטנה שלי, כל הצמחים אינם גדלים למעט
העשבים שמשגשגים. אנו זקוקים למעט שמש והתייצבות של מזג האוויר. למרות
שבחדר הגידול התנאים אידיאליים, יש תחושה שהציפורים מציצות החוצה, רואות את
מזג האוויר המגעיל, ומתעצלות. הלחות הגבוהה בבית הגידול הרסנית על בריאות
ורווחתן בחדרי גידול, ואני משוכנע שיש לה אותה השפעה הרסנית גם על הציפורים
בסביבתן הטבעית. אנחנו כמעט בסוף יוני, ועדיין לא ראינו ציפורים צעירות של
מין כלשהו. האם משהו נוסף באזורים הסמוכים חווה תופעות דומות?
קראתי בחלק מן הקבוצות
הודעות רבות הנוגעות למניעת מזיקים/עש בזרעים. חלק הציעו מיקרוגל. אישית,
אני לא אוהב מיקרוגל בכל מיקרה. המיקרו גל משמיד את הערך התזונתי של הזרעים
במהירות, יחד עם העש וביציו. מזון מבושל במיקרוגל אינו טעים כמזון שבושל
בדרך רגילה. בתנור רגיל נדרשות לבישול 45 דקות עד שעה ויותר, במיקרוגל ניתן
להשיג אותה תוצאה בדקות ספורות. אבל, אם תניח את הזרעים הנגועים בתנור
לדקות בודדות, העש וביציו יושמדו, ולא יפגע ערכם התזונתי של הזרעים.
אישית, אין לי בעיה של עם
עש. אנו עושים מה שהתחלתי בהודעה הקודמת. אנו עושים זאת באופן שגרתי בקיץ
למנוע מזיקים. מזיקים ועש הן תופעות טבעיות בזרעים, גרעינים, פסטות, דגנים,
שעועית, חומוס, עדשים ושאר מזונות לאנשים וחיות. אחסון נכון ומניעה הן
הגישה הנכונה להקל על בעיית המזיקים והעש בחודשי הקיץ. עש ומזיקים הם מטרד
לנו, אך אינם מזיקים לבריאות הציפורים ורווחתן, למעשה חלק מהציפורים ייהנו
לאכול חרקים.

Jersey, The Garden State. It is for sure some crazy weather here in
Somerset County. It is not good for the birds outdoors, it is not good
for my small farm, all my plants are standing still, only the weeds are
profusely growing. We need some sunshine and stable weather. Even though
I have an ideal environmental condition in my bird room, it seems that
the birds look outside, see the lousy weather, and act lazy. The high
humidity is very detrimental to the health and welfare of the birds in
bird rooms and I am sure the same detrimental effects occur for the
birds in their wild habitat. We are almost at the end of June and yet I
have not seen any youngsters of any species of birds. Is anyone else in
the surrounding area experiencing the same phenomenon?
I read in a few groups many postings regarding how to prevent
vermin/moths from being present in the seed. Some suggest microwave.
Personally, I don't like microwaves for anything. Microwaves quickly
destroy all the nutrients in the seed as along with the moths and their
eggs. Cooked food in the microwave doesn't taste the same as it would if
it was cooked in a regular oven. In a regular oven in order to proper
cook food it must remain in the oven for at least 45 min to and hour
plus. In the microwave you can accomplish the same in one or two
minutes, however, if you place the bug infested seed in a tray and put
it in a hot oven for one or two minutes it will definitely kill the
insects as well as their eggs and will not totally cook the seed leaving
most of the nutritional value intact.
Freezing the seed over night is the safest and most practical way to
eliminate the nuisance moths and other vermin that occur naturally in
seed and grains. If you recall my previous posting on the subject, what
I recommend to do is purchase a very small amount of seed in the summer
months and keep the bird room clean, do not allow scattered seed to be
left on the floor for a long period of time. You can also place several
moth traps in different locations in the bird room; they will catch the
moths and prevent them from laying eggs.
Personally, I do not have this problem with moths. We do what is stated
in my previous postings. We make it a routine during the summer months
to prevent the infestation of vermin. Vermin and moths are a natural
occurrence in bird seeds, grains, pastas, cereals, beans, chickpeas,
lentil, and all other human or animal foods. Proper storage and
prevention is the best approach in alleviating the problem with vermin
and moths in the summer months. Moths and vermin are a nuisance for us
but they do not have a detrimental effect to the health and welfare of
the birds, in fact some birds love to eat bugs.

part of the fun.
