אתמול ביליתי את רוב אחר
הצהריים בשיטוט באזורים שונים בהם קיננו ציפורי בר רבות בשנים עברו. הבחנתי
רק באדום חזה (Robin) בוגר יחיד מחפש מזון. שמעתי
את הזמרה של קרדינלי וירג'יניה אדומים (Virginia Red Cardinals)
וחקיינים (Mocking birds) בלבד. עד היום לא ראיתי
אפילו ציפור צעירה אחת. בעבר, במהלך החודשים שבין מאי ליוני, אני זכור
שראיתי צעירים רבים של אדומי חזה, קרדינלים ורבים אחרים, כמו גם פרושים
צעירים רבים המתחננים לאוכל בכל מקום. השנה, כלום, לפחות בחלק זה של מחוז
יוניון/סומרסט. האם יש אנשים נוספים בניו-ג'רסי ובצפון מזרח ארה"ב שהבחינו
בכך?
במהלך שלושת או ארבעת
החודשים האחרונים ניהלתי שיחות טלפון רבות עם מגדלים וחברים בחלקים שונים
של העולם, ובפרט אירופה. כמעט כולם העלו בעיות רבות בעונת
הריבוי הזאת. נראה שהתנאים
האקלימיים ומזג האוויר השתגעו בשנים האחרונות. אני גם חקלאי חובב. בשנים
האחרונות לכל מה ששתלתי גדל לאט, ונדרש זמן אינסופי עד לקבלת יבול. לעומת
זאת, העשבים גדלים בשפע, למעשה, אתמול אחר הצהרים, כאשר טיפלתי בשדה
הפלפלים שלי נאלצתי להשתמש באצבעות להפריד ביד העשבים לשיחי הפלפל. למעשה,
עשבים הדומים לצמחי הפלפל היו גדולים יותר מהפלפלים עצמם. כל החקלאים סביב
החלקה שלי גם הם קוננו על כך שכל הגידולים מאחרים השנה. הם כמוני מקווים
שמזג האוויר יתייצב וישתפר.
חדר הציפורים הענק שלי,
הממוקם בקומת הקרקע, מכיל מערכת אוורור מורכבת המפנה את האוויר העבש
ומכניסה אוויר טרי במקומו. כמו כן יש לי מפנה לחות (dehumidifier)
שפינה כמה עשרות ליטר של מים בימים האחרונים. הטמפרטורה
בחד הציפורים בימים בזמן זה של השנה לא עוברת את ה-27oC
ביום חם מאוד. בחורף, כאשר החימום מופעל, התרמוסטט מכוון
ל-23oC. סביבת האקלים היא יציבה מאוד כל
השנה ונעימה בכל זמן. אני מנסה ליצור תנאים אידיאליים בהם כל הציפורים
והאנשים המטפלים בהן יהיו מאושרים.
נראה כי למרות התנאים
הטובים ותנאי התאורה הטובים הכוללים תאורה טבעית ומלאכותית 14 שעות ביום,
רק עכשיו הקרדוליאנים שלי (Carduelans
- משפחת הציפורים הכוללת את
הסיסקינים, חוחיות וקנריות בין השאר) מתחילים לגלות עניין בקינון.
בשבועיים האחרונים האכלתי את הירקונים האירופאים שלי (מהציפורים המועדפות
שלי), כמו גם את החוחיות האירופאיות, בזרעי חריע שהושרו היטב. זרעי חריע
מושרים, בשילוב עם זרעים אחרים וזרעי בר או זרעים מונבטים מסייעים בהכנת
הקרדוליאנים לריבוי. בנוסף, זרעים מושרים אלה חיוניים בדיאטה של
הקרדוליאנים. למעשה, הקרדוליאנים מאכילים את הצעירים שלהם בעיקר בזרעים
מושרים וזרעים בשלב החלבי.
חלק בהגולדיאנים שלי
עדיין מתרבים (הייתי רוצה שיפסיקו באופן טבעי). גולדיאנים, כמו גם ציפורים
דומות כגון בנגלזים, גם הם מאכילים את הגוזלים שלהם בעיקר בזרעים מושרים,
ובמהלך חודשי האביב המאוחרים ועד עתה אני מספק להם עשבים רבים עם זרעים
בשלב החלבי. בחיי, הם באמת ממלאים את הצעירים שלהם בזרעים מושרים וזרעי
עשבים בשלב החלבי/בוסר.
הטימברדו מס' 1 שלי
AA18-00 הוציא
עד עתה 36 גוזלים משלוש נקבות שונות. הוא קנר זקן וחרמן! הוא אוהב נקבות!
כמו שהזכרתי במיכתבי הקודם, אני מרכז קבוצת צעירים של טימברדו וחוחיות
אירופאיות צעירות וזקנות וגם פרושים מצויים. אני סקרן לגבי שירת הטימברדו.
הטימברדו יחכה כל שיר; למעשה יש לי עכשיו טימברדו זכר המחכה את השירה של
הפרוד המצוי ועוד. הטימברדו פוריים מאוד; הם מתרבים יותר טוב מעכברים. איך
זה?

Yesterday I spent a good part of the afternoon roaming in different
areas that in the past years had a lot of wild bird nesting
activity. I only noticed an adult Robin scavenging for food. I
heard the songs of Virginia Red Cardinals and Mocking birds only. No
young wild birds have been visible to me to this date. In the past,
throughout the months of May and June, I remember seeing numerous
baby Robins, Cardinals, plus many others, and as well a lot of food
begging young Sparrows everywhere. This year, nothing, at least in
this area in Union/Somerset county. Has anyone in other areas of New
Jersey or in the Northeast noticed this same phenomenon?
In the last three or four months I've been having phone conversations
with fellow fanciers and friends in many parts of the world,
especially Europe. Mostly everyone that I spoke to lamented a
variety of problems encountered during this breeding season. It
seems that the climate conditions and the weather have gone crazy in
the last couple of years. Agriculture is also my hobby. In the last
couple of years, everything that I planted took forever to mature and
produce crop. The weeds, however, are growing profusely, in fact
yesterday in the afternoon while I cultivated my pepper field I had
to use my finger to separate the pepper plants from the weeds. In
fact, weeds resembling pepper plants were bigger than the peppers
themselves. All the farmers around my property in Warren lamented
that everything is behind this year. They as well as me are hoping
that the weather stabilizes and changes for the better.
My huge bird room, which is located on ground floor level, has an
elaborated exhaust system that removes all the stale air and
exchanges it with fresh air from outside. Also, I have a
dehumidifier that in the last couple of days has removed several
gallons of water from the environment. The temperature in the bird
room at this time of the year during a very hot day will not exceed
80 degrees. In the winter months, when the heat is on, it is set to
be 74 degrees. The all year round environment climate is very stable
and pleasant at all the times. I try to create an ideal condition
where all the birds as well of all of us that work it the bird room
will be happy.
It seems that most of my Carduelan Finches in my bird room this
breeding season despite the good environment and good light
condition, natural as well as artificial where approximately 14 hours
a day is available, to this date finally they have shown some
interest in building a nest. In the last couple of weeks, I have
been feeding to the European Greenfinches (one of my preferred birds)
and also to the European Goldfinches properly soaked Safflower seed.
Soaked Safflower seed along with other seeds coupled with wild seeds
or weeding grasses are valuable foods to bring the Carduelan Finches
into breeding conditions. Also, these soaked seed are essential in
the diet of the feeding Carduelan Finches, in fact all Carduelan
Finches feed their youngsters primarily with soaked seed and seeds of
grasses and weeds in the milky stage.
Some of my Gouldian Finches are still breeding (I wish they would
naturally stop). Gouldians as well as similar other birds including
Society Finches also feed their young primarily with soaked seed and
during the late spring as well as during this time I feed them plenty
of seeding grasses in the milky stage. Boy, they really stuff their
youngsters with soaked seed and wild weed seeds in the milky/immature
stage!
My number one Timbrados AA18-00 so far has produced thirty-six
youngsters with three females. He is a horny old Canary! He loves
females! As I mentioned in my previous postings, I am grouping a
bunch of younger Timbrados with European Goldfinches young and old
and also Chaffinches. My curiosity will be what the Timbrados will
sing like. A Timbrados will imitate any song; in fact I have a male
Timbrados right now that mimics the songs of the European Chaffinches
and others. Timbrados are highly prolific; they reproduce themselves
better than mice. How about that?
