ולדוברי האנגלית שבינינו,

אני נוהג לאכול בצלים
ושום מדי יום. זה מרחיק את היתושים, הזבובים, החרקים ומרבית האנשים הבאים

יש לי שני אתרים עם
ציפורים.
אתר אחד הוא איש סודי
ושותפי העסקי פרנקו גובי בקורגיו, רג'יו אמיליה. אצל פרנקו אנו מייצרים
חוחיות רבות, כולל מוטציות וקרדוליאנים אחרים. בכל פעם שאני מגיע לשם, כל
הציפורים מזהות אותי ומסתכלות על ידי כאילו מבטאות "בוא ותן לנו מעט
מהאוכל הטבעי שאתה מביא בכל פעם שאתה מגיע!" כן, באמת, בחצר הענקית של
פרנקו גדלים מעדנים רבים הכוללים עולש, צנוניות, ציקוריה, שן הארי, כוכבית,
נר הלילה, חמניות בר קטנות שהגיע מהחווה הקטנה שלי. בזמנים השונים של השנה
כאשר אני מגיע רוב הצמחים הנזכרים זמינים שם או בשדות הסמוכים. לפרנקו אין
זמן לעשות את הדברים שאני אוהב לעשות עם הציפורים, אבל אני חייב לומר
בתוקף, ההצלחה שלו בריבוי חוחיות אירופאיות וקרדוליאנים אחרים נובעת מכך
שאני מגיע לשם לעיתים קרובות ונותן לציפורים את הדברים להם הן זקוקות
לבריאות ופוריות. בגלל הדחיפה שלי, הוא נשאר נאמן לציפורים אפילו בהיותי
רחוק משם. ציפורי כלוב בכלל וקרדוליאנים בפרט לא יחיו חיים שמחים ופוריים
על זרעים יבשים מהשק בלבד. כפי שהזכרתי פעמים רבות בעבר, הציפורים בבר,
ובכללם קנרי הבר, לעולם אינם אוכלים זרעים יבשים בלבד. הן אוכלות זרעים
יבשים רק מהמאכילים שאנשים שמים בחצרות האחוריות שלהם (אני חושב שזה לא
נכון להאכיל את הציפורים בחצר האחורית, בפרט לא בזרעי החוח והניגר
המעוקרים) (ואני ממש לא מסכים עם אמירה זו - ת.ג.). הציפורים בבר
נודדות מצפון לדרום, ממזרח למערב, ועוקבות אחר מזג האוויר למקומות החמים
יותר. לדוגמא, הציפורים האירופאיות, כולל החוחיות, נודדות מהצפון הרחוק של
אירופה לאפריקה מדי שנה. במהלך המסע לאזורי החריפה שלהן הן מוצאות את כל
המזון הטבעי לו הן זקוקות לשמור על בריאותן. ציפורים שאוכלות היטב, אין שום
ספק שיהיו פוריות בעונת הריבוי (באביב!).
בזמן זה של השנה, על כל הציפורים בשבי
לקבל כמות קטנה של מזון טבעי כמו עלים ירוקים ודשאים צעירים, היכן שהם
זמינים. הפחיתו את כמות העלים הירוקים מהסופרמרקט מכיוון שהם ספוגים
בכימיקלים כדי להראות יפים לעיני הלקוח. אם אתה חייב להסתמך על עלים
מהסופרמרקט, כמו גם על כאלה הנאספים מהשדה, השרו אותם ב-5 ליטר מים עם שתי
כפות מלבין (אקונומיקה). השרו את העלים למשך כחצי שעה, שטפו היטב במים
זורמים, נערו את המים העודפים, ותנו כמות לכל הציפורים פעמים מספר בשבוע.
תנו לי לחזור שוב, כל סוגי הציפורים אוכלות הזרעים, כוללי קנרי הבר, אינם
ניזונים מזרעים יבשים מהשק בלבד, אלא אם אנשים טובי לב מספקים אותם.
הציפורים בטבע ניזונות מזרעים יבשים אשר נפלו לקרקע וספגו לחות (לעולם לא
יבשים). זה המקור לשימוש בזרעים מושרים. רעיון טוב הוא לתת זרעים מושרים
מעורבים במזון גוזלים יבש מספר פעמים בשבוע בזמן זה של השנה. על ידי כך, כל
הציפורים נשארות מורגלות למזון אותו הן חייבות לקבל במהלך עונת הריבוי (באביב!)

שאני עולה אני מאבד מספר ק"ג).
אבל, אני אוסף בשמחה כמות נדיבה של זרעי
בר ועלים ירוקים ומטפס בשמחה. האדון אשר אחראי לבית הגידול הזה הוא גמלאי
נעים הליכות אשר מזמן עבר את גיל העמידה. הוא מתרברב בהצלחתו בריבוי מינים
רגישים של ציפורים.
פעמים רבות, כאשר אני מעיר, הוא מתרברב
"ובכן, בכדי לרבות ציפורים בהצלחה חייב להיות לך כישרון!"
יש לי בערך 300 רד-סיסקינים שם,אך באופן
מצער רשות שמירת הדגים וחיות הבר לא מאשרת להביא אותם לארה"ב באופן חוקי
(אני לא אעשה כל דבר בלתי חוקי להביא ציפורים אלה או ציפורים כלשהם מעבר
לים).
רשות שמירת הדגים וחיות הבר בארה"ב טוענת
כי הרד-סיסקין הוא מין בסכנת הכחדה, שטויות. הציפור המקוללת מגודלת בשבי
בבתי גידול רבים ברחבי העולם. היא לא מין בסכנת הכחדה באירופה או כל יבשת
אחרת. רק האנשים האהובים בוושינגטון מאמינים בשטות זו. אם משהו מכם זוכר
לפני זמן מה כתבתי על הנושא של מינים בסכנת הכחדה. בזמן תערוכה בגרמניה היו
המוני רד-סיסקינים שחורי כיפה למכירה. שאלתי את נציג המקבילה הגרמנית לרשות
שמירת הדגים וחיות הבר (רשות הטבע והגנים שלנו ת.ג.) "האם ציפורים
אלו אינן נמצאות ברשימת המינים בסכנת הכחדה?" האדון השיב לי בנימוס, "לא
בגרמניה. אולי בארה"ב, אבל לא כאן". (אני חייב להוסיף הסתייגות שלי כאן,
בנוגע למינים בסכנת הכחדה, ומינים מוגנים ומינים מקומיים - לדעתי יש להגן
על ציפורי הבר בארצות מולדתן - ובמיוחד הדבר מתייחס לסחר בציפורים. לכן יש
צורך להגן בכל מדינה כנגד סחר בפריטים שנלכדו בטבע, ולמנוע את הפיתוי ביצוא
הציפורים ממדינות עולם שלישי למדינות המתועשות. בהחלט יש מקום למצוא פיתרון
לאחזקה וריבוי של ציפורים ילידות שבי, על מנת להקטין את הפיתוי ללכידת
ציפורי בר, וגם בישראל ת.ג.)
אני מקווה שהתקנה הטיפשית תוקל מעט כך
שאנו בארה"ב נוכל לקדם את קידום הציפור היפיפייה והצבעונית הזו.
הגולדיאן פינק אמור להיות מין בסכנת
הכחדה? כיצד הגולדיאן יכול לעבור מיבשת ליבשת מבלי שום הגבלות או סרט אדום?
אני מאמין שישנם מינים רבים של ציפורים ברשימת המינים בסכנת הכחדה, אבל
מרבית הציפורים עוברות מיבשת ליבשת ללא כל סרט אדום.

Everyday I eat onions and garlic abundantly. This keeps
away the
mosquitoes, flies, insects, and most of all people that come to talk to
me very close to my face.
In Florida there are a lot of mosquitoes, especially in the rainy
season. For years they chewed the hell out of me, until I discovered
the effectiveness of the garlic and onions.
While I was traveling in the northern part of Italy, to be exact, the
Reggio Emilia area, despite the cold weather I noticed everywhere an
abundant quantity of wild greens including chickweed, dandelions, and
others bearing a lot of tender seeds.
I have two locations with birds.
One location is my confidante and business associate Franco Gobbi in
Coreggio, Reggio Emilia. Over at Franco's place, we produce lots of
Goldfinches including mutations and other Carduelans. Every time I
arrive at that location, all the birds recognize me and look at my hands
sort of expressing "Come on, feed us some of that natural food that
you always feed us every time you come over here!" Yes, indeed, in
Franco's huge yard grows all kinds of goodies including escarole,
radicchio, chicory, dandelions, chickweed, Bella di Notte, small wild
sunflowers introduced there from yours truly's small farm. At the
different time of the year that I am there, most or all of the above are
available there or in surrounding farm areas. Franco doesn't have
much time to do the things that I like to do with the birds, but let me
express very firmly, his success in breeding European Goldfinches and
other Carduelans is thanks to me that I am there very often and I
provide all the birds with what they need to be reproductive and
healthy. Because of my pushing to him, he has somehow been faithful to
the birds when I'm not there. Caged birds and especially Carduelans
will not live happy and reproduce themselves well with just dry seed
from the sack. As I mentioned many times before, birds in the wild
state, including wild Canaries, never eat dry seed alone. They eat dry
seed only from the feeders that people provide in their backyards (I
think it is very wrong to feed the birds in the backyard, especially
those worthless sterilized thistle/niger seeds). Wild birds migrate
from north to south, from east to west, and follow the pattern toward
the warmer climates.
For example, the European birds, including the European Goldfinch,
migrate from the extreme northern part of Europe toward Africa every
year. On the way to their winter destination they find all the natural
food they need to maintain their health. Well-nourished birds, without
any doubt are very productive during their breeding season (in the
spring!).
At this time of the year, all the birds in captivity should receive a
small amount of natural food such as greens and seeding grasses,
whenever they are available. Minimize the feeding of greens from the
supermarket because they are loaded with chemicals to look beautiful
before the eyes of the consumer. If you have to depend on the greens
from the supermarket, as I mentioned many times in the past, as well as
the ones gathered from the wild state, soak them in a solution of a
gallon of water with two tablespoons of any kind of bleach. Soak the
greens for about a half an hour or so, rise thoroughly under running
cold water, shake the excess water, and feed a small amount to all birds
a couple times a week. Let me repeat once again, all species of seed
eating birds, including wild Canaries, do not nourish themselves on dry
seed from the sack unless provided by the good intentioned people. The
seed eating birds in their wild habitat eat dry seed, which has fallen
on the ground and become swollen by the moisture on the ground (never
dry). That is where the idea of soak seed came about. It is a good
idea to feed a small amount of properly soaked seed blended with some
good dry nestling food a couple times a week at this time of the year.
By doing so, all seed eating birds remain accustomed to the food that
they must receive during their reproductive season (IN THE SPRING!).
The other location where I am involved with birds, where we breed a
substantial numbers of Black Hooded Venezuelan Red Siskin plus other
Carduelans, is on the third floor of a very tall building (lots of steps
to climb, every time I do the climbing, I lose a couple pounds).
However, with pleasure I gather a generous amount of wild seed and wild
greens and I do the climbing with pleasure. The gentleman in charge of
this set up is a retired, pleasant, well over middle age man. He brags
over his success in breeding and reproducing delicate species of birds.
Many times when I make a comment or remark, he boasts "Well, to
successfully reproduce birds you have to have talent!"
I have roughly 300 Red Siskins available there, but unfortunately, the
Fish and Wildlife will not grant me the permit necessary to bring them
legally to the USA. (I will not do anything illegal to bring those birds
or any birds over seas).
The Fish and Wildlife of USA claim that Venezuelan Black Hooded Red
Siskin is an endangered species, BS. The damn bird is so abundantly
reproduced in captivity everywhere in the world. It is no longer an
endangered species in Europe or in any other continent. Only the
beloved people in Washington exercise this nonsense. If anyone of you
remembers that sometime ago I wrote about the subject on endangered
species. While in Germany in an exhibition there was so many Black Hood
Red Siskins for sale for next to peanuts. I asked an official from the
Fish and Wildlife equivalent agency in Germany "Aren't these
birds supposed to be on the endangered species list?" The gentleman
replied to me positively, "Not in Germany. Maybe in America, but
not here."
I hope the stupid regulations will relax a little so that we in the USA
will be able to carry forward the propagation of this beautiful and
colorful bird.
Gouldian Finches are supposed to be an endangered species? How come
Gouldians can travel continent to continent without any restrictions or
red tape? I believe there are many other species of birds on the
endangered list, but most birds travel continent to continent without
any red tape.
With the help of my computer wizard and web master Michael we have been
posting a photo album of the Reggio Emilia show. When we finish (I hope
soon), there will be close to a hundred photos with a description of
each photo. So far we have quite a few in already, so go on the Abba
