Greetings from the cool spring like
temperature Garden State. Jeez! The weather has been so confusing in the
last couple weeks! There have been cold, miserable, and other unusual
occurrences for this time of the year, which should be sunny and
pleasantly warm.
Yesterday I was in my estate in Warren
planting wild sunflower seeds, Perilla seed, Nyger seed and other seed
that we will hopefully be able to harvest later this summer? Unusually
for this time of the year, because of the cool climate, we lost the
little plants earlier on account of the sudden drop of temperature near
to the freezing mark. Other fanciers in the northeast also lost their
seedlings. One day the temperature is 80 degrees, overnight and the next
couple days it drops to the freezing point. Crazy!
It seems that the wild bird activity
contrasted of last year is very active. Yesterday in Warren I saw at
least two pairs of Cardinals, house Finches, lots of Robins, and other
birds actively scavenging all over my property. Obviously, either they
are feeding youngsters somewhere in the bush, or building their nests.
Inside the roof of my partially covered patio, two large birds decided
to build a nest. One was a Robin and one was a Black bird. I can't wait
until the youngsters fledge so I can take a photo of the nest and post
it in the group photo album as well as the Abba web site photo album at
www.abbaseed.com <http://www.abbaseed.com/> , click on photo album and
there you can see a lot of other photos of greens, vegetation, etc. all
good things that is fed to the birds.
I purchased a couple dozen very
expensive tomato plants. Unfortunately, overnight some birds destroyed
most of them. At this time of the year last year my tomato plants had
flowers. This year, we didn't even plant anything as of yet. I still
don't trust the weather.
Because of the spring condition weather,
greens and vegetation is growing abundantly. Everyday all our birds have
a feast. Again, yesterday, I picked up a considerable amount of seeding
grass, such as rye grass, fescue, and other. The Gouldians are having a
feast every day. It is a pleasure to watch them strip every little seed
from the grasses and weeds. Also, we have been gathering a lot of
chickweed and dandelion seed heads. The Carduelan Finches look forward
every day to receive this natural bounty. As I enter the room, they look
in my hands first for what I'm bringing in. Unfortunately for the birds,
they will miss me for the next couple weeks; I will be traveling through
Europe on a business trip and visiting many fellow fanciers. Many of
them are anxiously awaiting my arrival. I hope to learn a lot more new
things and maybe they will learn lots of new things themselves from me.
I appreciate if every one of you keep on
posting. Keep active and don't be dormant. Feed your birds in your spare
time and get out of there fast, give them some peace and quiet. In fact,
if you leave the birds alone, they will breed better. Spend your free
time sharing the information in the groups. We learn from each other. Do
your share.
Hopefully and I mean hopefully, the
pleasant and warm weather will arrive soon. The birds need it and people
need it. Be careful with moist food, they spoil very rapidly and
definitely will kill the youngsters in the nest and make the parents
very sick too. Feed the moist food a small amount at a time. And for
God's sake, make the soft food fresh before each feeding. Do not trust
the refrigerator, it is a source of cross contamination; meats, poultry,
eggs may all contaminate your bird food. Salmonella bacteria is
everywhere! If you read any meat package, they suggest that we sterilize
our hands and properly cook the meat well before we eat it. Humans can
tolerate some bacteria, but birds will get sick with a very minimal
amount of bacteria.
Produce lots of young birds and prepare
them to be exhibited in all the exhibitions, including the COM-USA,
which will take place in Hillside, NJ on November 9th, 10th, and 11th
2007. Once again, I want to repeat that most Finches, Parrots (large and
small), Budgiegars, Yorkshire Canaries, if you are a member of COM-USA
you can exhibit those birds and compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze
medals among other awards. Again, I repeat, Colorbred Canaries and all
the other similar smaller Canaries must have the COM-USA registered band
in order to be placed in competition.
I'll be with you in a couple weeks. Keep
on posting.
