בימים האחרונים היה דיון נרחב בפורום בנוגע
לשימוש בציפורן חתול וכוכבית מצויה. הסקרנות שלי הביאה אותי לאסוף כמות של
צמחים אלה. הרתחתי כמות נכבדת של שני הצמחים במים למשך 20 דקות. אחרי
שהנוזל התקרר וסיננתי אותו, נתתי אותו כמי אמבט לציפורים. שמתי אותו גם
במרסס וריססתי על כל הציפורים הערפל עדין. יש אצלי צפיפות יתר של כנרים
וציפורים אחרות. צפיפות יתר מביאה לתוקפנות ומריטת נוצות. אני סקרן מה
ייקרה בימים הבאים כאשר אני משתמש בנוזל זה? אתם מוזמנים לצעוד קדימה ולספר

מדי שנה אני שותל כמות אדירה של ציפורני חתול
סביב בית הגידול החיצוני שלי. בעבר מגדל אחר לימד אותי על יכולתם של
ציפורני החתול לדחות חרקים. בימים האחרונים אספתי פרחי ציפורני חתול בכל
מיני גדלים ושמתי בתוך הכלובים, והציפורים זללו אותם בתאווה.למרות התקדמות
הקיץ ציפורני החתול פורחים בשפע בכל השטח שלי. אספתי כוכבית מצויה בשלב
ייצור הזרעים באזורים המוצלים. כל סוגי הציפורים מעדיפים כוכבית מצויה על
כל סוג עשב אחר. הגולדיאנים משתגעים עליה, ומאכילים בה את הגוזלים. גם
הפינקים הקרדוליאנים מעדיפים אותה על פני העשבים האחרים. בתחילת האביב היה
לנו שפע של כוכבית מצויה. הציפורים התרגלו אליה כל כך, שהן החלו להסתייג
משן הארי, הכרוב, ה-Broccoli Rabe (סוג של עלים) ואחרים, ונדרש מאמץ לוודא
שיוכלו גם אותם.
שתלתי בשטח שלי מספר חלקות קישואים. בשבועות
האחרונים קטפתי עלים עדינים שלהם ונתתי לכל הציפורים כולל הגולדיאנים
והקרדוליאנים, ששמחו לאכול אותם. בני אדם רבים ובמיוחד איטלקים אוכלים
קישואים כמו גם את הפרחים והחלקים העדינים של הצמח עצמו. אם בני אדם יכולים
לאכול אותו מדוע לא הציפורים? לעת עתה כל הציפורים שלי קיבלו עלי קישוא ואף
לא אחת מתה מהם, לכן ניתן לראות שהם טובים גם לציפורים.
אנו זהירים מאוד בזמן זה של השנה לא להאכיל
בזרעים מושרים שהחמיצו. במזג אוויר חם ולח הכול מתקלקל מהר יותר ורעלנים
עלולים להיווצר והאמינו לי שהם הורגים ציפורים, צעירות ומבוגרות. עדיף לתת
כמויות קטנות שהן יאכלו תוך כשעה. הציפורים יחיו היטב מזרעים יבשים ונקיים.

In the last couple of days there has been
quite a bit of discussion in the groups. There have been quite a few
postings about Marigolds and Chickweed. My curiosity prompted me to
gather some Chickweed and Marigold flowers. I boiled a considerable
quantity of the two mentioned above for about twenty minutes. I let the
liquid get cold, filtered it, and gave it to the birds as a bath. I also
put it in a spray bottle and sprayed all the birds with a fine mist. I
am overcrowded with Canaries and other birds. Overcrowding promotes
fighting and feather plucking. My curiosity is what will happen in a few
days after I have been using the above-mentioned liquid? Has anyone else
in this group been using this method? Please come forward and state your
outcomes and experiences.
I plant every year a tremendous number
of Marigold plants all around my outdoor aviary. In the past I learned
from some other fellow fanciers that Marigolds act as a repellent of
avian parasites. In the last several days I have been gathering
different sizes of Marigold flowers and I place them in all of the
cages, which in turn all birds devour them with gusto. Despite the
advance of this summer season Chickweed has been growing plentifully in
many areas on my properties. I gathered Chickweed in the seeding stage
in shady areas. All species of birds prefer Chickweed to any other
variety of greens. The Gouldian Finches go crazy about Chickweed and
they abundantly feed their youngsters it. Carduelan Finches also prefer
Chickweed to the rest of the greens. At the beginning of the spring we
had an abundant supply of Chickweed. The birds got so used to that, they
would not freely eat Dandelions, Kale, Broccoli Rabe leaves, and others.
It was a struggle to make them eat these last mentioned greens.
In my properties I planted several
zucchini patches. In the last couple of weeks I have been gathering
tender leaves of the same and I fed it to all the birds including
Gouldians and Carduelans and they ate it with passion. A lot of humans
and especially Italians eat zucchini as well as the flowers and the
tender part of the plant itself. If humans can eat it why not the birds
too? So for a couple of weeks all my birds have been eating zucchini
leaves and not one has died from it, so obviously it is good for the
birds too.
We are very careful at this time of the
year that we do not feed sour soak seed. During the hot, muggy weather
everything spoils quicker and toxins may form and believe me it will
kill birds, young and old. It is better to feed a small amount of what
they can consume in an hour or so. Birds will do well on dry, clean seed
and it is sufficient to keep the birds alive and well.
