לכל החברים לתחביב המרבים או מנסים לרבות
קרדוליאנים, לדעתי עונה זו התחילה באיחור. אפילו הציפורים בטבע, לא רק בניו
ג'רסי אלא בכל רחבי העולם, חוו התחלה מאוחרת.
לפני מספר דקות שוחחתי עם מספר מגדלים חברים
מאירופה, והם אמרו לי שעונה זו הייתה בעייתית לקרדוליאנים. מגדל גדול אחד
של חוחיות מבלגיה, אשר הוציא 600 עד 700 חוחיות מדי שנה בשנים הקודמות.
הגיע השנה, לאחר הרבה מיתות והרבה ביצים שקופות, לפחות מ-200 צעירים לאחר
עבודה קשה. הדבר תקף גם למגדלים נוספים מבלגיה, גרמניה, צרפת, איטליה ועוד.
מגדל קטן מאיטליה התוודה באוזני כי צעירים
רבים בוקעים ומתים ביום שאחרי. הצעירים נולדים חלשים מאוד ואינם מסוגלים
להרים את הראש שלהם ולפתוח את הפה בכדי לקבל מזון מההורים. הוא אמר לי שעד
כה מתו לו מעל 50 גוזלים. הוא אמר כי הוא ימשיך לנסות ולראות האם יצליח
להפוך את המצב השלילי. הוא אמר לי גם כי רבים מחבריו חווים עונת ריבוי
עלובה.
הוא משוכנע כי היצרנים הגדולים של חוחיות
בבלגיה וחלקים גדולים של אירופה מאביסים את הצעירים בסוגים שונים של
אנטיביוטיקה לשמור אותם בחיים. בשלב כלשהו, הציפורים אינן יכולות לשאת זאת
יותר, מערכותיהן מורעלות במידה כזו שתוחלת החיים של הגוזלים שלהן יורדת.
כאן בארה"ב, העונה הייתה משוגעת גם כן. כפי
שאזכרתי בעבר, גם ציפורי הבר לא התרבו. בלילה שעבר, למרות הטמפרטורה של כ-
40מעלות צלזיוס, ביליתי בחוץ מספר שעות עומד בשקט, מסתתר מאחורי שיחים
בשדות ענקיים. באותם מקומות בהם ראיתי בשנה שעברה מאות חוחיות אמריקאיות
אוכלות ואוספות חומר קינון. האזור מסביב היה מלא חיים עם אתרי קינון. השנה
ראיתי מספר מועט של פרושים אנגליים, מספר סטרלינגים (Sterling) ומספר
עורבים, שום דבר למרות חיפושי אחר חוחיות אמריקאיות.
רוב הקנריות שלי בחדר הריבוי מופרדות ובכלובי
תעופה גדולים, לאפשר להן החלפה שלווה.
היפרדתי את רוב הגולדיאנים שלי ואני נותן להם
לנוח עד המחזור הבא באזור אוקטובר. כל זוגות הגולדיאנים שלי הפיקו כמות
אדירה של צעירים. יותר מדי כחולים, יותר מדי צהובים, יותר מדי פסטלים וגם
כמה כסופים. שנה הבאה אני אייצר יותר רגילים. אני אוהב יותר את הרגילים.
הגולדיאנים כמו גם הקנריות מקבלים כמות נדיבה של עולש בשלב יצירת הזרעים.
בתקווה הצעירים יקבלו פלומה יפה בסיום ההחלפה.
אני מספק לחוחיות שלי ולקרדוליאנים האחרים
שפע חוחים (Thistle) ועשבים אחרים עם זרעים, כולל עולש. אני מקווה שחלק מן
הציפורים יכנסו למחזור ריבוי? הטמפרטורה בחדר הגידול שלי מתחת ל-27 מעלות
צלזיוס. חלק מהחוחיות האירופאיות שלי, הירקונים ומזמרים הירוקים בעלי פלומה
במצב מצוין, מעילים מאוד, והזכרים שרים מכל הלב. אני מקווה כי שירת הזכרים
תביא את הנקבות להתרבות. אני אמשיך לנסות ולקוות לתוצאות טובות.

For all the fellow fanciers that are
breeding or trying to breed Carduelan Finches in my opinion the season
has been late starting this year. Even the birds in the wild state, not
only in New Jersey but also in many parts of the world, have experienced
late starting.
Just a few minutes ago on today's date,
July 18th, I spoke to a couple friends in Europe and they told me this
year has been a problematic breeding season for Carduelan Finches. One
particular large European Goldfinch breeder in Belgium has in all the
past years produced six to seven hundred Goldfinch youngsters, this year
so far after lots of lost youngsters, lots of clear eggs, he has
approximately less than 200 youngsters for which he had to work very
hard more so to breed than in the past years. The same lament for other
Belgium Goldfinch breeders as well as other Goldfinch breeders in
Germany, France, Italy, etc.
A small breeder in Italy confessed to me
that many youngsters hatch on one day and are dead in the nest the next
day. The youngsters are born very weak and are unable to raise their
heads and open their mouths to get fed by the parents. He said to me
that so far this year he has lost over 50 hatchlings and he has very
disappointed and frustrated. He said to me he was going to keep on
trying and see if he could reverse the negative situation. He also told
me that many of his friends are experiencing a very poor breeding
season.
He is convinced that the major producers
of Goldfinches in Belgium and many other parts of Europe stuff the
youngsters with various antibiotics to keep them alive. At a certain
point, the birds cannot take anymore, their biological system has been
poisoned and as a result they produce unhealthy youngsters with very low
survival rate.
Here in the USA, the season has also
been crazy. As I mentioned many times before, even the birds in the wild
state haven't been producing any youngsters. Last night despite the
temperature of nearly 100 degrees I spent a couple hours standing still,
hiding behind bushes in the huge fields of a variety of Thistle in the
seeding stage. In the same location at this time last year I saw
American Goldfinches by the hundreds feeding and gathering nesting
material. The surrounding area was alive with nesting sites of the same.
This year so far I have seen very few adult English Sparrows, some
Sterling and some Black birds, nothing else despite my intensive search
for American Goldfinches.
Most of my breeding Canaries in my bird
room are separated and placed in large holding cages to allow them to
molt in peace.
I separated most of my Gouldians and let
them rest for the next cycle around October. All my pairs of Gouldians
have produced an enormous quantity of youngsters. Too many blue, too
many yellow, too many dilute and some silver too. Next season I am going
to try to produce more normal. I like the normal better. The Gouldian
Finches as well as the Canaries receive a good amount of Chicory plants
with lots of seed in the immature stage. Hopefully the youngsters get in
beautiful plumage color by the end of the molt.
I am providing my Goldfinch and other
Carduelans everyday a plentiful supply of Thistle and other seeding
weeds, including Chicory. I am hoping that some of the birds will decide
to go into the breeding cycle? The temperature in my bird room is below
80. Some of my European Goldfinches, Greenfinches, and Green Singer
Finches are in excellent plumage condition, very active, and the males
are singing their hearts out. I am hoping that the females by being
serenaded by their mates put them in the breeding mood. I am going to
keep on trying and I am optimistic for some good results.
