Greetings everyone from the cold,
shivering? New Jersey, The Garden State. I returned from Europe last
night, this morning bright and early I went online for the first time in
a few weeks. To say the least, I am glad to be back and chatting with
you.
During my traveling in Europe, I managed
to visit and interview a few bird fanciers. Some of the fanciers didn't
allow me to take photos or they do not want me to disclose anything that
I saw there. However, a few others allowed me to tell the truth of what
I saw and post the photographs. I will post several photo albums
containing dozens and dozens of photos in the Abba website photo album @
www.abbaseed.com <http://www.abbaseed.com/> . Click on Photo Album and
then view the various photo albums. For instance the following albums
are Carlo Bizzarri, Franco Gobbi, Tiziano Bassoli, Genaro Chianase,
Mario Cararro, Giorgio Rusciano, Salvatore Condemi and friends,
Salvatore Sessa, Mimmo Simonelli, Carmello Zaponne and his friends,
Franco Bucalo, Dr. Massimo Natale, Lino Miloni. I actually visited lots
more fanciers than mentioned above, but they denied to me the permission
to describe their breeding activity, maybe on my next trip? In the
meantime I am sure that many of you will enjoy the array of photos of
the above-mentioned fanciers. I will try to describe in sequence the
activity and the success of the above-mentioned gentleman and fellow
fanciers.
Carlo Bizzarri lives in Correggio,
Reggio Emilia. He lives on a large plot of land and small farm. I have
known him for a couple decades. He is a pleasant person and pleasurable
individual to converse with. He breeds European Finches, including
Bullfinches, Chaffinches, Goldfinches, and a few others. In addition, he
breeds Venezuelan Green Cardinals. His photo album includes a nest of
four youngsters fed by their own parents and grown healthy and
beautiful. Also, a nest of three European Bullfinches can be seen. In
his huge outdoor flight, the Chaffinches, Greenfinches, and others were
in a nest so I asked him not to disturb them to take a picture. In the
photo with Mr. Bizzarrri is my old friend Franco Gobbi.
Franco Gobbi also is from Correggio,
Reggio Emilia in northern Italy. I have known him for nearly three
decades; I have been sort of his mentor. Last year he had a very
successful breeding season, he produced a considerable amount of
European Goldfinches plus many other species including Black-headed
Siskins, Virginia Red Cardinals, and others. Last year he had problems
with mites and other avian parasites. I worked with him for a couple
days to correct his situation with the avian parasite infestation,
thereafter; he experienced a very fruitful breeding season.
Unfortunately in 2007 he did not use his head, he went to a feed store
and fell in love with the vapone strip. Without reading the instruction
he hung the poisonous insecticide fumes in his small bird room. The
temperature was very hot. Overnight he lost 90% of his breeding stock.
The birds, which were located in the lower cages, barely survived the
ordeal, but three months later the birds were still drunk and sick after
breathing the fumes from the vapone. (Incidentally, vapone strips have
been banned from sale in the USA and most parts of Europe. Obviously,
Franco bought that vapone strip illegally sold by the feed store). Well,
he learned a lesson from that incident. I ordered him to consult with me
before he makes any changes in his bird room.
The breeding result this year so far has
been producing some Black-head Siskin, some Virginia Cardinal, and just
a couple baby Goldfinch mutations. In a phone conversation today, he
said that the few Goldfinches that remain alive are beginning to show a
sign of willingness to breed? Well the breeding season has been terrible
all over the world. Of the people that I visited in Europe, the
filthiest ones emerged very successful. The weather has been just as bad
and unpredictable as we experience in the Garden State (temperature this
morning was 53 degrees). Even the vegetables are struggling to emerge
from the ground. Everything is late.
I will continue this rambling in the
next few days. In the meantime, enjoy what I have been able to post in
the photo album so far.
My breeding program, to my dismay, when
I visited my bird room has also been disappointing. Hopefully the
weather will stabilize and the birds will get in the breeding mood and
produce some youngsters.
